July 29, 2025—As highlighted in a recent CreditUnions.com article (“3 Ways the Balance Sheet Is Adjusting to New Borrowing Habits,” June 23, 2025), consumer financing behavior is undergoing a significant transformation. In response to evolving economic conditions, members are reassessing not only how they borrow but also where they seek credit. This shift underscores the growing importance of agility in lending strategies.
In today’s rate-sensitive and highly competitive lending environment, credit unions must sharpen their focus on both acquiring and retaining loan relationships. Loan portfolios have a significant impact on balance sheets, both as a source of interest income and as potential interest rate or credit risk. Understanding consumer trends is critical—not just for loan growth, but also for aligning asset-liability management (ALM) strategies with emerging member preferences. Credit unions that are able to adapt to these dynamics will be better positioned to manage risk, optimize yield, and deepen member engagement.
